M.V.Mataora
There are three wrecks to dive around the island, two of which (the Mataora and the Maritime Reefer) are owned by Dive Rarotonga and were sunk by Barry, the former owner to create artificial reefs.

Lion fish on the wreckThe Mataora, once a Tongan registered 395hp cargo vessel, 44.25m in length and 299 Gross Tonnes was purchased on the 11th Dec 1990 from Silk and Boyd for the massive sum of $1!!  She started her last voyage to the sea bed a couple of days later and now lies in 18m just off the reef to the north of the island (21° 12' 04" S , 159° 45' 59" W).  A little while after sinking, the island was hit by a cyclone, breaking up the wreck and separating the bow and stern.  Today it remains an excellent dive site for all levels of diver.

A home for Lion fish
The wreck and the surrounding area is now home for quite a few different species of fish. Probably the most beautiful being Lion Fish.
