PADI Assistant Instructor
The PADI Instructor course is divided, like many PADI courses, into two sub component courses, the PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) course, and the Open Water Scuba Instructor course (OWSI). Both together are called the Instructor Development Course (IDC).
As a PADI Assistant Instructor, you not only gain additional experience as a PADI Professional scuba diver, but you also start learning the PADI System of diver education. This course is taught by Ed, our Master Instructor (yes, you will see the guru himself diving!) and you will learn what it takes to be a useful instructional scuba assistant and assume limited teaching responsibilities. It’s a great way to gain experience in order to become a scuba instructor!
What's involved
Independent Learning - This consists of about 16 hours of home study - completing the Candidate Workbook Knowledge Reviews prior to the IDC.
Then Ed will guide you through the following course sessions:
- Learning, Instruction & the PADI system
- Developing Knowledge Development presentations
- Teaching the Project AWARE & Peak Performance specialities
- PADI Discover Scuba Diving & Snorkelling programs
- Teaching in Confined Water
- Conducting Open Water Training dives
You build upon your abilities to organize and supervise scuba diving activities, while concentrating on developing teaching skills. You learn through open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations.
The PADI Assistant Instructor Course takes three days
- Homework: Completing the Candidate Workbook Knowledge Reviews
- Pool: Pool sessions include a skills evaluation and teaching in confined water sessions
- Theory: Around two days of classroom sessions and presentation techniques. Open book PADI Standards exam, you'll be pleased to hear!!
- Boat dives: The 2 boat dives are completed in one afternoon
- Certification: When you have completed the course we will take your photo and send your Assistant Instructor application form to PADI. All being well with your application, you will then receive your PADI Assistant Instructor qualification card direct from PADI in the post.

- The PADI IDC crewpak includes all the materials needed to prepare for a PADI Assistant Instructor or Open Water Scuba Instructor course.

Pre-requisites
- Currently PADI Divemaster qualified or equivalent
- Medical statement completed and approval to dive obtained from a medical doctor within the last 12 months
- Min age 18 years
- Have 60 logged dives, including night, deep, and navigation dives & been a certified diver for at least 6 months
